My Thoughts

I wanted to love this book, I really did. I was a little confused most of the book. I had pretty high hopes for this book. I have been pining for it since the say I saw the first countdown, and jumped for joy when my husband bought it for me. And now I am just… sad that I do not have a spectacular review to share.

The pace was a little strange. The beginning started great with Megan moving to a new school and making new friends. And, of course, she feels this immense tug toward Adam. Now, I am a huge fan of “our love is destined”, but I had a hard time with the Adam/Megan love. They just sort of fell onto one another in the middle of the book, and it was all “I love you, we need to be together” without any previous interaction. I like to see a couple that is destined to be together having some sort of relationship. It was just confusing, like I missed a part of the book. I also couldn’t help notice the similarities to Twilight. Enough said.

The middle became agonizingly slow. There was a whole lot of information thrown at me; it all got muddled together and I became even more confused. It was just too much at one time, and definitely not enough romance or interaction between Megan and Adam at this point. The information also felt very drug out. I found myself hrumphing at this point and getting very distracted. I really had to push myself to finish reading the rest of the book.

The end seemed a bit rushed, which was a huge change from the middle of the book. Megan was kidnapped, and became evoked, and saved them all at the same time.  I had to take a huge breather at the end because I felt literally out of breath after reading the ending. It was also too much too fast.

The premise of the book was interesting to me. I liked the fact that Megan is from this world and this family that she has no idea about. I unabashedly admit that this type of story is one of my favorites. And, it turns out she has some freaking awesome powers. I just wish we would have seen more of it. There were only a few instances where you did see the powers that Megan and the DeRis family have. I would have loved to catch more of these awesome powers in action. I am extremely interested in the concept of harnessing the powers of the elements.

I also think that the setting for the story is pretty awesome. Ireland is definitely not an area where most of the books I read take place in. It was a nice change of pace.

I do have to say one think about a character in this book. Aine, Adam’s twin sister, is fantastic and incredibly interesting. I really wish we could have seen and heard more from her. A deeper friendship between Aine and Megan would have made the story more fun.

Altogether, Carrier of the Mark was an okay read. The pace was strange and at times confusing. The romance was warm, but definitely not sizzling. Waiting for the second won’t be too agonizing, but I am very curious to see where the story turns to.

Favorite Character: Aine

Least Favorite: We aren't getting into this one.

Just okay.

I 100% agree with your wonderful review Sonny :) I wanted to love this book because of the hype that came along with it but it wasn't the case.

My fave character was also Aine - she was fascinating.

Great review!

I wanted to love this book as well, but there were some really uncanny similarities between it and Twilight and as much as I tried, I couldn't shake those thoughts.

I think you did a great job with this review--it's fair and specific. It's always hard when a book doesn't live up to expectations, but this review will actually help sell the book, to the people who would most enjoy it. I think reviews are a bit like matchmaking. I don't review very much because my fragile ego gets in the way (and I make jokes that could offend), so I have to give reviewers huge props for making the effort and putting themselves out there.
