Author Interview- Perry from Hexult

Here at Literary Junkie, I have been up to a little mischief!

Okay, well not so much.

But, I am proud to say that I have done my first author interview and would love to share it with all of you!

I have been keeping in contact with Perry Aylen, author of Hexult.

Tell me about yourself 
Well, first off, I must come clean and tell you that ‘Perry Aylen’ is a pen-name.  Perry Aylen is in fact, two people. We wrote Hexult together, but unlike most teams who share the load and work together,
we work more like opposing teams, fighting each other, pushing to sway the story to fit our own ideals.

What was your inspiration for the world of Hexult?
This is a very tricky question, I think back and back, but it seems as if the frozen lands of Hexult have always been a stage in my mind, just waiting for a story  to be cast upon it.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
My favorite chapter was the ice fair, because I could see it so clearly in my mind’s eye. I could  feel the excitement and the wonder, see the colours around the base of the tower, smell the carnival atmosphere. It was a simple joy to describe it in words.

Which character do you enjoy the most?
I think I like Ingar best, her character is the one that develops and changes most throughout the story.

Series or standalone- which do you enjoy the most?
I don’t really like series, I prefer a single story, but I don’t care if that story runs over a number of books.  ‘Lord of the Rings’ for instance, it is three books, but you would not consider it a series, just one long story.

 

What are some of you favorite books/series?
His Dark Materials has to be one of my favorite series, I just loved
the imagination used, especially in the second book.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I like anything original, and if it has some maths or science in it, even better (sad, I know), hence I absolutely loved The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

What types of books do you like to indulge in?
I love to read books to my twins that have character voices, it makes them interesting and fun to read.  At present I’m reading Loamhedge by Brian Jaques, the characters are personified animals, but they all have the most wonderful accents, especially the  babes: “thankee, zurr, oi wus stucked thurr fer loife!” - Don’t try and translate it, just read it out-loud.

Took the edge off.

The world is covered in ice. The only way to travel in Hexult is by boat.

Aulf is the mailman between the islands in Hexult and Ingar is his crew. One day on their way to deliver mail, Aulf and Ingar find a boat which has perished. Inside were twins Jacob and Elya; their father dead from the crash. When Aulf and Ingar take the twins in and help them, the four of them and the whole of Hexult dives into a world of adventure.

Raiders are around every corner, ready to jump on unsuspecting prizes. The islands are in shambles from the lack of trust and communication. Jacob and Elya seem to be a beacon of light in the ice covered darkness. They have brought with them the knowledge of science that is put into use to help the islands. But, the islands are not making the twin’s arrival welcome. They are suspicious people.

A small feud begins to breakout between the local wizard, Gabriel, and the twins. Because of Jacob and Elya’s strange knowledge science make the locals believe that they are new wizards. And Gabriel only fuels their flames to be back on top.

Finally, the islands begin to trust the strange newcomers, and with this trust comes a jump into the future. They people of Hexult that had once found the twins to be suspicious are now looking to them as almost saviors of their way of life.

My Thoughts:

First off, Hexult is not at my reading level or my particular taste in books. This book is more geared toward children and the middle school age group.

With that information out of the way, I do find the world of Hexult to be imaginative and enticing. Although, it did take me quite a few chapters before I was able to get the gist of the story and indulge in the characters. As the story went on and the more interesting Hexult started to become, the easier it was to lose myself in Perry Aylen’s words. But, I think that the world of Hexult could have been deeper, more exciting.

Aulf, one of the main characters is sweet and energetic. He captivates the audience with his never-ending generosity and love for Hexult. Ingar was just as equally interesting.

All in all, Hexult was an okay read.

But, do not hesitate to pick this one up for your children. They adventure and the magic of an unknown world will be sure to captivate a young person’s mind.

Pretty excited about Hexult. This the first book I was ever asked to review, so I guess it will always be close to my heart. At least I hope! Anyways, I do love a good disaster book, and movie for that matter, and I am sooooo looking forward to this read!
